The Province of Matera presents a population of 204.239 inhabitants in 2001, on an area of 3477 square kilometres on which the density of population is quite low: about 59 inhab/sqKil. Administration is divided in 31 towns of small dimensions: besides Matera, there are 4 towns with more than 10.000 inhabitants (Bernalda, Montescaglioso, Pisticci e Policoro), 9 towns with a population between 5.000 and 10.000 residents, 7 towns between 2.000 and 5.000 and 10 below 2.000 inhabitants. The most populated towns are situated on the Jonic coast, near Matera; little villages are in the inmost areas. Matera gathers the 28% of the population with the major concentration of services and communications. The difference between job vacancies and the number of occupied workers gives data for working positions available to other workers who come from other provinces.
The Province of Matera is a Local and Territorial Administration operating in compliance with the terms of Testo Unico of E.E.L.L.
D.lgs n. 267/000 in the field of the programming economical, environment, transport, tourism, cultural properties. cultural, instruction, education, labour.
The Province’s administrative structure is composed of:

 Department for Internationalisation productive Environment and Tourism
 Department for Procurement and Tenders
 Planning and finance Office
 IT- and E-Government Office
The Province of Matera employs 385 part-time workforce and 381 full time workforce. The latter are :
- 289 units into the managing services;
- 88 units into the accounting and administrative services;
- 4 units into the administration service.
For the development of project activities it has been foreseen a supporting local network, composed by: University of Basilicata, the Chamber of Commerce Italic-Hellenic, The Foreign Centre of Basilicata, The Basilicata Region, The Chamber of Commerce of Matera, Transport Operator Consortium and Organization. All these Local Partners have been sharing and studying the constraints affecting the transportation systems in the ARCHIMED Project plan, and they have been involving in the project area by allocating their expertise.

INTERNATIONAL-EUROPEAN-NATIONAL-LOCAL PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES ON TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS

Regarding the Province’s experience, in compliance with the Project issues, at present, it administrates and is responsible (in the area of Infrastructure and Transport) for the following terms:
• The agreement of the infrastructure programme for an engagement roughly 50ML Euro;
• The plan of Territorial intervention in adhesion to Regional Plan of Transport;
• Territorial Pact of Province of Matera roughly 17 ML Euro;
• Initiative to develop the productive environment and infrastructures functionally for a single initiative or productive development.
The Province is, further more leading partner and coordinator of PRUSST for a budget of roughly 1.5ML Euro according to the aims of structural Fund Reserve for 2000-2006 for the Province of Matera and AREE PIT.
Concerning to the Planning in areas of transports, the Province is going to complete the Triennial Services Programs, propedeutics in promoting competitions of L.P.T. (Local and Public Transports) and the passage from the concessions with the service contracts.
This phase will be concluded with Provincial Conference of L.T.P for analysing and filling up the territorial needs.
In the meantime, it has been previewed a financial amount in adding to the regional funding, to purchase Software for planning and managing of the service control of the L.T.P., and for publication the integral schedules, in addition to an on-line management with help-desk of poly-functional door which is nearly to be inaugurated, (Budget Regional Transferred 10.000.0000,00 Euro).
Referring to the Province experience in the field of Structural Funds and EU Policies, it has accomplished a large number of projects in the last few years, with the collaboration of others Entities and companies.
The Main projects carried-out by the Province are:
 “REGIONLINK” : Recite II (Art. 10 ERDF Internationalization of SME located in the Regions Objective 1.). Trans-national partnership: Spain, Portugal, Finland, Italy.
 “RADICI”: Project developed in accordance with CIP Equal II aimed at write-off the discrimination in the labour environment also through the enterprises creation and enhancement of cultural and naturalistic properties. Trans-national Partnership: Greece, Belgium, Finland, France, Italy.
 “NET SOCIALITY” Project developed in accordance with CIP Equal II
 “INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS FOR THE LOCAL DEVELOPMENT”: PON ATAS Measure II, Action 1. Specific actions of animation and promotion of stable links between economy of “Mezzogiorno” (Southern of Italy) and the Italian residents in foreign countries. All aimed at internationalising the economy of Basilicata region. Trans-national partnership: Germany, Italy.
